Here we go again!

Ralph Lauren came under fire for a re-touch of their advertisement of 23-year-old Filippa Hamilton.  Hamilton is 5’10″ and weighs 120 pounds.   In a statement, they admitted, “poor imaging and retouching errors” and said that they had addressed the problem.

They addressed the problem all right. They fired Hamilton.

Ralph Lauren let Hamilton go after six years with the company “as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us.”

What does that mean?

Wait, there’s more.

Hamilton told NBC Today Show Host, Anne Curry that she was let go because she’d become too fat to model for the company.  Hamilton said that Lauren wrote a letter to her agent saying, “We’re terminating your services because you don’t fit into the sample clothes that you need to wear.”  Read Lauren’s full statement here.

So, what’s the deal?

Kate White, the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine who was also interviewed on the Today show with Hamilton said,

“I think women have to protest, and back it up, because sometimes women say they want real girls in stories, but often those stories don’t rate as well, and if you put a heavy celebrity on the cover, it may not sell as well,” White said. “Women have to complain and then back it up with their actions — with their pocketbooks.”

Let’s keep telling the fashion industry because they are not getting it!

It’s time.  For ourselves and for our daughters.  It’s time.

We love it! And we are adding another magazine to the list!

First Glamour Magazine then Brigitte Magazine from Germany, and now Marie Claire debuts the first plus size style column.

In an effort to attract women who more accurately reflect the demographics of U.S. women, Marie Claire has hired Ashley Falcon, a  a 5-foot-2-inch, 220-lb. fashion stylist, and a Size 18W,  who will be giving out fashion advice in her “Big Girl in a Skinny World” column that is geared toward the plus size woman.

First up. in her November column Falcon offers tips for the best jeans for plus size bodies as well as finding the accessories (they always fit).

What we love the most is Ms. Falcon’s column is really her honest musings about being plus size in the fashion industry. She says, ” I long ago made peace with the fact that I’ll never look good in a slinky dress or pleated paper-bag-waist pants, even if Coco Chanel herself came back from the dead to hand-stitch them for me. So I stick to cuts that always flatter—even in a size 18—like wrap dresses and pencil skirts.”

We also like her advice already!! Need a wrap dress or in the mood for a pencil skirt?

Check out our Martini Wrap Dress from Diane Kennedy and we love this denim pencil skirt from Kiyonna! When is next month’s issue coming out? We’ll be ready!

Is it a revolution, cost cutting measure, publicity stunt or just good common marketing sense to more accurately reflect the audience you serve?

Recently Glamour Magazine made headlines when it announced that it was featuring a pictorial of normal to plus size nude models in its November issue. Debuting the image last week on the Ellen DeGeneres show, Glamour Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Leive, commented about Glamour’s decision to include women of all shapes and sizes in their ads and said how Glamour was inspired by reader comments about model Lizzie Miller and how women reacted to that ad because they finally saw a part of themselves reflected in a magazine advertisement.

And now, Brigitte Magazine, one of the more popular magazines from Germany announced that starting in 2010 it would only use women with “normal figures.” Brigitte sells 700,000 copies and offers readers  fitness, lifestyle, recipes and sex related articles which appeals to an upwardly mobile, younger career women demographic. Editor-in-Chief Andreas Lebert, said the change was, “in response to complaints by readers who said they had no connection with the women depicted in fashion features and no longer wanted to see protruding bones.”   How exciting! Two magazines! Who is next?
