Move over Melissa!

Australian comedienne Rebel Wilson has partnered with retail chain, Torrid to launch her new line of plus size women’s clothing.

Rebel Wilson For Torrid includes ensembles and accessories inspired from Wilson’s signature style in movies. The brand’s all-new spring collection will debut on Feb. 7, 2015.

While on a promotional tour for her upcoming movie “How to Be Single,” Wilson told E!Online that one of her reasons for pursuing the new venture was that she wanted to see more on-trend, youthful styles. She is surprised that she could design clothing.  ”I didn’t think I’d be able to design clothes,” said Wilson. “I thought, ‘That’s not in my repertoire.’”

We hear that Wilson has been deeply involved during the designing process. Shirts that have koala and microphone prints and clothes with the word, Rebel were all her ideas.

Well, it is cold outside! While we are safe and warm inside, it is time to review a few of the winter coat trends we are seeing this season to make sure you are up-to-date and in style!

By now, perhaps you will find a few things on sale if you have not already and can take advantage of these great on-trend styles.

Here are the trends we loved the most!

The #1 coat trend is a the boyfriend jacket which is oversized and very flattering to the plus size silhouette as long as it is not too big so that it looks sloppy.

The #2 coat trend features color and long length.  If you are short, focus on color rather than long length and splurge on color!

The #3 coat trend is the cape or shawls such as this shawl coat from Jessica London.  We love capes and ponchos and they are super flattering to the plus size woman.

You will also see colored fur, fringe and even faux fur, leather and mixed media once again.  Take advantage of all the sales out there to update your wardrobe!

Very often, the lessons of the past  can give us insight into the future. The hard work of pioneers like Susan B. Anthony, have devoted their lives to making women’s lives better.

Susan B. Anthony, the legendary civil rights advocate and leader of the women’s suffrage movement believed strongly that women should be paid equally for doing the same work as a man and that women had an inherent right to “have a purse of her own.”

Ms. Anthony said,

“Woman must have a purse of her own, & how can this be, so long as the wife is denied the right to her individual and joint earnings.  Reflections like these, caused me to see and really feel that there was no true freedom for woman without the possession of all her property rights. . .This demand must be made by Petitions to the Legislature. . .”

It’s just an alligator purse.  But, it represents so much more than a purse.  It is the representation of the goals and aspirations of all woman-kind.  She knew that by women gaining the right to vote, it would be the beginning of the path to independence and freedom.

With independence and freedom comes the realization that we have a responsibility to do all we can to protect our “purse.”

Decide that this year, 2016, will be the year you will start planning for retirement and thinking about your future.  A recent CNBC article revealed that only 53% of women have started planning for retirement compared to 65% of our male peers!  You can use this free retirement calculator to help with planning for all of the things you may want to accomplish in the new year such as buying a new home or starting a family.

Here is a quick review of the hot topics for 2015 and what we hope will be front and center in the plus size fashion industry for 2016.

Since we now have talked the term plus size to death….perhaps the industry will either come to terms with the label or create a new way to discuss the plus size fashions that range from sizes 12W-24W.

Plus size models DO NOT encourage people to be plus size, they encourage people to accept themselves as they are.   I love the fact that we are seeing more and more plus size models in with other models.  It signals acceptance. I was brought up in a time when we were shamed about our plus size figures.  My hope is that the younger generation thinks differently and acts confidently without regard to size.

From Ava & Viv, Target’s new line to Melissa McCarthy’s Seven Line, and Beth Ditto’s upcoming line this year, we are excited to see as more and more designers are thinking about plus size women for all shapes and sizes.  It is a good sign.  What I am concerned about is still the lack of plus size fashions for 40+ women….

While it is hard to predict the future, I do believe the plus size industry is poised for greatness this year.  Let’s think fashion forward for 2016.

Happy New Year!
