Plus Size Designers

I always love to look at what Designer Tadashi Shoji has in store for us and it is pastels!~His theme: Sweet Liberation. He said, “ Everything is stronger, frosted white, white tulle, white sequins, white lace, on cool pinks and mint, and all of these stronger colors.”  Women are not afraid of being strong and feminine!

When you get a minute, take a look

In a recent interview with Elle Magazine, the designer talked about why he does not shy away from designing for Plus sizes.  He said that perhaps they are not confident about the clothing or to make bigger women look beautiful.  He said, he is up for the challenge and confident he can do it.

We agree! He has done it and we hope he will keep doing it!

This week’s Fashion Flash is hosted by Staness at Menopause Makeover!

Good news!  We can add  Toula to the esteemed list of Sakes Fifth Avenue plus size designers.

Perhaps it signals that times are a changing?

Oh, how I wish we could add them to the list of plus size boutiques as well.  What do you think? Maybe in time?

Following other luxury labels, women’s apparel manufacturer Toula will debut its  plus size Fall 2010 collection at Saks Fifth Avenue’s New York Flagship store.   The collection is made up of  mix and match pieces in women’s sizes 14W-24W.

“We’re excited to expand our reach through this partnership and reach a much larger, cosmopolitan audience,” explained Steven Wang, co-owner of the label. “Toula has been available for decades at smaller boutiques, but this distinctive line sold at Saks will reachan entirely new market.”

The collection features forgiving wool and rayon fiber blends which lends itself  to curvier women’s shapes and can be blocked up or down a size to accommodate body fluctuations.  The pieces enhance a woman’s natural silhouette with flattering cuts and elegant, understated detailing.  The wrinkle-resistant fabrics are ideal for the traveling professional woman with refined taste.

Complete outfits from Toula will retail from $1200-$1600.

Toula joins the luxury labels which previously sold items up to a size 10.  This season, size 14′s will hit the shelves from a myriad of designer labels including: Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Akris, Armani, Carolina Herrera, Escada, Donna Karan, St. John, Oscar de la Renta, Max Mara, Valentino, Michael Kors, Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Fendi and Roberto Cavalli.  It has been reported that some designers will even go up to a size 20W, with Toula going up to a size 24W.

Toula started in 1986 in a a one-room factory in the home of owners Eddie and Ming Wang and has grown into a successful family business, now run by their son Steven Wang.

Toula has stayed true to its original mission of creating practical and sophisticated clothing.  Classic, timeless and well-made describes this fashion forward designer.  With the majority of fashion designers not making clothes for everyday people, Toula focuses on mature, professional women and has prospered as a result.

In just a few hours, we will be debuting our new A People United line. Taken from a Chilean folk song whose lyrics proclaim that “A People United Can Never Be Defeated” this company has provided over 1,000 scholarships for Nepali children to attend private schools. We are pleased to bring you items from a socially conscious company that provides a superior product.

The Tribe Collection which we feature in our show room and on our site, offers great pieces for plus size.  Each piece offers an up-to-date style,  a comfortable, relaxed fit, without compromising style, and features breath-able cotton fabric in generous cuts.  The tag on each garment reads:  Tribe is handcrafted by village weavers in Nepal.  Spun into thread and interwoven in the cloth, you may find natural imperfections such as those inherent in our lives, our minds and our bodies.  Please appreciate the unique quality each purchase offers as you contribute to the education of 160 of our Nepalese workers children and the future they will influence.

Any question in your mind now as to why we added A People United to our collections?  Founded almost 20 years ago, by Robert Gruber, a practicing attorney who went back to school to obtain a Master’s in Public Health.  While working for the Federal Government in the Public Health field, Robert came up with the idea for A People United.  Now a family affair, Robert’s wife, Laura Emberson, is the talented in-house artist and the creator of the line’s unique prints.  Both Robert and Laura and their children are often featured in promotional pieces wearing the clothing. Robert contacted us about a year ago and we were very impressed with the story of A People United.  And, we were ecstatic when we actually saw the line in person! We know you will be delighted to wear these pieces.

We have more items shipping for Fall ’09 and cannot wait until you see how all of the pieces can mix and match.  You’ll want to get them all!

A People United’s corporate strategy depends on the partnership with their boutiques and through you, our customers, to value the workmanship inherent in each garment and the knowledge that the line is not only beautiful and value-priced, but is also helping to create a better world.

We began with the Contour Jacket as the center-piece of the line and will add several tops and jackets, including the Contour jacket in different colors, this Fall.

Join me in welcoming A People United to Black Cat Plus: A unique story, a signature collection and a company for our time.

YASB (You are so Beautiful) is a 3 year old company. We are known for our engineered scarf prints that are designed into tops, dresses & skirts. We are excited to have the well known designer Anna Paul on our team. Her contemporary designs with embellishments & embroidery are for the better, upscale markets in America & Japan.

For Anna Paul, Hollywood glamour is in her blood. Growing up in Beverly Hills, surrounded by some of the most dazzling women in the world, she always knew she wanted to be a designer. Anna grew up loving fashion and spent her teenage years working in local boutiques after school, selling, dressing mannequins and windows, and whatever she could do to learn the ropes. She then shopped vintage stores in her spare time educating herself. Anna has over 25 years of experience in the fashion industry.

Anna credits some of her success to her first job out of school. “I lucked out and got the most fabulous assistant designer position with a fashion designer who created one of a kind masterpieces for celebrities and socialites. I learned so much – the entire process – pattern making, draping, threads, trims. I was truly ‘an apprentice’. she took me to Dallas market – I learned what a school can’t teach – live learning – I loved it!!”

“Fabrics, trims, art…these are the things that inspire me. I love to bring together exotic elements from all over the world – beading, embroidery and fabrics to create feminine, flattering pieces that will make women feel more beautiful.”

Anna believes that curves are beautiful! “all women, no matter what height or size should feel beautiful, sexy and feminine!”
