plus size

Most people may be under the impression that in order to be famous and successful you need to look fabulous. Size 0 clothing is wrongly taken as the statement for being fabulous. Many celebrities do wear small sizes but in reality they are not all size 0 and some of the hottest celebs wear a size 6, 8 and beyond. In order to point out that beyond size 0 is also beautiful we have looked at three celebrities that do not fall under the size 0 bracket, but at the same time are totally rocking the red carpet.

Melissa McCarthy

Firstly, we would like to introduce Melissa McCarthy to you all, although we are more than certain that you would have seen her before. Melissa is dominating both the television and the movie world by bringing fun and laughter into it. Some of the films that she has been in include Bridesmaids, Hangover Part 3 and the Heat.

McCarthy is not a celebrity that is size 0, however she is one of the most positive images of what it is to be a happy and successful woman in Hollywood today. Melissa has not only got an upbeat personality and sheer talent, but she is also funny and a mother of two. Many of us could just appreciate how positive she is towards her body image and the way she stands up for herself in front of critics expressing opinions about her weight.

Although Melissa once used to be size 6, she doesn’t beat herself up for her gaining weight, even more – she is happier than ever with her fuller frame. She feels like she has it all and therefore she shouldn’t be negative and/or depressed – at the end of the day she has two great and healthy children, and a husband of her dreams. “Everything else is just a work in progress” she adds.

Currently Melissa is in turn to change the industry and minds of society, she is keen on making it more relevant for more woman, making it a better place to be. McCarthy has started her own line, following a refusal from Hollywood designers to dress her for Oscar’s ceremony – this is unacceptable and that is why she has come up with her line to let the woman feel happier about themselves.

Adele

The second celebrity who is totally talented and amazing is Adele (full name: Adele Laurie Blue Adkins). Adele is a British singer-songwriter, who has won many prestigious awards such as the BBC Sound of 2008. Adele is the first female in history of Billboard hot 100 who has had three singles in the top 10 at one time. She has also had two of her albums in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 and two of her singles in the top five of the Billboard 100 simultaneously. Adele has two albums so far “19” produced in 2008 and “21” produced in 2011, and has managed to win 10 Grammy awards ever since 2009. She is more talented than many more of the other singers nowadays, she has one of the most unique voiced in the industry.

Adele has often been criticised for her weight by celebrities such as Karl Lagerfeld and Joan Rivers, whilst gaining support by many others by stating that she is satisfied with her weight and would not change it unless it was affecting her health, wellbeing or sex life.

Adele doesn’t want her weight and body image ruling her life, “I have insecurities, but I don’t want to hang out with anyone who points them out to me” she mentions. The dress size doesn’t say anything about the person’s capabilities. The dress size alone doesn’t make you famous or talented, it is something that comes from inside. Believe in yourself and learn to love yourself again!

Queen Latifah

Last but not least is the Queen Latifah (real name Dana Elaine Owens) known to be as one of the most influential American female rappers, singers, songwriters, actresses, models and media personalities. Her work in music, film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Image Awards, a Grammy award, six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination.

Queen Latifah is one of the celebrities who always stresses the importance of respecting and loving our minds, bodies and souls. “When I was 18, I looked in the mirror and said, you are either going to love yourself or hate yourself. And I decided to love myself and it changed a lot of things” she said.

Queen Latifah used to struggle with her weight and has never wanted to be associated with/labelled as plus size. She thinks that such status is not fair and unintentionally devaluates the women. This is one of the reasons why she started her own collection, she wanted to allow more women being able to find outfits that fit their body size and shapes. Queen Latifah wanted to set up a company that respects all women and match their needs.

We women all want to look beautiful and feel good about ourselves. There are clothes there for everyone, available in a variety of sizes and styles from designer labels to high street brands. Be creative with your clothing, and ditch the black for a bright colour which will make you feel beautiful and sexy. Seek out memorable colours that you don’t see or wear every day and don’t break up the look with clashing accessories or scarves. Having your hair in a high bun is on trend and will slim your face and neck. Taking these great tips from these gorgeous celebrities will make you learn to love yourself again! So go on, dip into your wardrobe and embrace the brighter new you!

Once again, the use of a plus size mannequin has stirred debate about fashion, obesity and body image.  The Swedish department store Ahlens has a mannequin that represents the curvier woman with its rounded stomach and larger bust line.

The store’s choice has sparked debate about whether the use of mannequins are encouraging women to be at an unhealthy weight or whether it is good for a woman’s body image to see a mannequin that represents the average size of today’s women.

It is interesting that this debate comes at a time when many countries such as Britain and Spain, are placing limits to designers as to what size models can be used to represent their clothing lines.    However, I believe it is a smart move for retailers who are trying to appeal to women who are interested to see accurate representations of their size.   What do you think?  Check out this week’s Fashion Flash from Fab Over Forty!
